Re-write...
You know all you patient people that I went to Mexico for a couple
of weeks this past summer. I wrote about it and put a couple of
sound clips up back on August 14. However due to operator error I
managed to completely erase the page.. that's a bit sad however
let's get going with the Mexico story...again.
In 1999 I stopped in on the town of Saucillo Mexico in
southern Chihuahua just looking for a river that I had been told
about. You see there was a woman in the neighboring city of Delicias
I had met her on some previous adventure and it took a long time to
get back there again and there really wasn't much of a tale to tell
of that hot romance as it mainly existed in the realm of the mind..
my mind ...Male obsession/illusion fantasy and she definitely was
worthy but alas she had decided to enter a convent. Yes a tragedy to
many, well.. me anyways.. but that's OK. I still kept her in my mind
and yes, heart too... but hey this story is about music.
In 1999 while waiting for permission to gain a sitting with
my royal highness. I needed to get out of the city and someone said
take the bus to Saucillo there is a River there. I thought maybe
that was a good idea I wanted to sit by a pleasant river and emmm
...chill.
On the way to the river I met some musicians. It was hot. It
was midday. There were three musicians under the shade of a tree. I
went right over we talked some. They weren't about to play some
music. I realized that it's part courtesy, it's part respect... it's
how they make a living gringo. I took out my wallet and gave them
something green and they proceeded to give me a short personal
concert that had me feeling elevated into some realm of awe and
delight these guys were so heavenly.. good.

Now it was 2005 I was back...I had not
exactly given up on the queen of Mexico she hadn't written back and maybe
if you are in a convent and some guy is still hot for you (marriage is a
high road ..a real fine road) maybe you best not encourage him or even
talk to him so I didn't know what was going on down there. Maybe she
finally dropped out and ... no. Come to find out she is Mother Mary now,
and living in Espana. Blessings on the world. That woman is something
else. Wow.
But it was all about music I brought my DAT recorder down
there I wanted to personally hideaway and make music for two weeks but
also wanted to find those musicians again.
I found Ventura, Los Andarieggos de Saucillo are no more well
maybe that's to strong a statement maybe there will always be Andarieggos
de Saucillo. Andarieggo is apparently old spanish word for a person who
does a lot of walking it is also the title of a traditional Mexican tune
and it exactly describes the lifestyle of Ventura and his musician amigos
as just about every night they head out to make the rounds of the tavernas
in Saucillo stopping in here and there where there is a little action
getting a few pesos for a tune and scratching a living doing what they
love.

Here in front of
the Sindicato de Cancioneros y Filarmonicos 'Fernando Rosas' inside
this little concrete blockhouse where I think my best recordings
took place.
Left to right Jesus 'Chito', Santos, Ventura, Elias, Silvestre,
& Tony
Holy Mother of Pearl forgive me Ventura if its taken so
damn long to begin to share your music with the world it's just that
. DammmmmmmNNN! Son o0f a Gun I am so BaD! Lord a mighty!@
This heavenly music and I don't know how to share it.
Two songs. I want to be back down there for at
least a week maybe 10 days in December.
Anybody who is at all truly moved impressed or
otherwise please send me a note saying something to the effect of go
man go! Please.
Two tunes first this piece of Iconic
soulful archetypal Spiritual Holiness! Called Cielito Lindo.
You know you have heard it before. Cielito Lindo ... 'Canta
no llores'.... (Sing, don't cry)
maybe I will give you the version in the bar with
people talking half over it and Luis, the bum managing an audible
spit half way through.. but damn I still love this version. Then my
very last day waiting for the bus Ventura showing up late one more
recording session inside the sindicato with its small concrete
blockhouse design three tunes and run to catch the bus back home
finally holy cow back in the USA my home sweet home. ( work in
progress )
So here
are three tunes... 1) Cielito
Lindo recorded live in a 'drive-in' bar's patio in Saucillo
Mexico mid-summer 2005.
2) Cielito Lindo recorded live in the Sindicato blockhouse.
Just because I love this song one more version.
3) and El
Popatito this little Rock and Roll Tune that I loved when
I first heard it and at that last day Ventura relented and
played it with Jesus 'Chito' who had never played it at all..
period. with Ventura and did so and did an absolutely great job.
