Bandlands

  February 16, 2006

Well I have just got myself in a major computer - freezeup of classic proportions. Hopefully I'll get it remedied within a day. Its my Mac that I create my videos on.

Meantime I had a fun (lol) and very rockin' video from Chuck Day and the Burning Sensations all ready to transfer over and get upline (or whatever they call it) as well as a 4 minute classic story that Chuck provided from the patio. A story about Richard Pryor that is perhaps one of the greatest Richard Pryor stories of them all and yes it is uncensored and yes I think it is still suitable for most preteens as well as us so-called adults.

I didn't know that back in the sixties Chuck was hanging out with Richard Pryor. In his, Chuck's,  days with the Johnny Rivers Band (Secret Agent Man - you new that) Richard occasionally would open up before the band played. That was fairly common Chuck tells me for comedy acts to open up shows at clubs before the band plays and it was common apparently for the rhythm section players to hang with the comedians and make fun of the Front Man in their spare time. That leads to the story and hopefully you will enjoy it here online shortly.

Last night after getting my ... Heart  hmmm well I guess it got what it deserved but somehow it had its hopes up for an afternoon rendezvous with big time implications (no I am talking real bigtime) but after that well it seemed my day was over.. boohoo (relief actually.. twas just my imagination running away with me) and I went home and went to bed early pulled the blankets over my head but I was up again and what the heck Plan V, was to get out there Valentines night and make something happen! More Video.. oh very exciting. Yeah I could have put the camera down there were at least 5 women .. make that 6 at the three clubs.. make that 7 at the three clubs I visited that were worthy of some nice relaxed attention, you know Guy if you just tried a little harder.. etc just a little. Great women Guy, you woulda/coulda made a great couple or ... septet. Yeah Yeah but I'm a very boring Guy. Brought my camera. No maa'm just Rock n Roll.

I have been doing this for some time now. The players know me, most of the bartenders know me I am how do I say this sort of a fixture.. or what? What have I created what am I creating? These and many questions go through my mind and frequently the minds of artists who you have enjoyed on this site. It's not all groovy not at all it's a lot of work. I keep thinking I am getting close to turning the mythical key and the engine turns over and vrrooomm up and running
success for bands for me pull myself out of debt etc... Its really close but I have been saying that for what seems forever.

Sometimes I am enriched way beyond my expectations and well beyond what I deserve with the camaraderie and generous spirit and affection shown to me by artists who I consider my friends (whether they want to kick me in the ass or not) as well as all the other friends that I have met over the years in this 'Rockus' environment of and sometimes it seems like (mostly rare) I am and I don't blame anyone for feeling this way... I feel some of their frustration with me. How come this isn't flying yet what is that dude doing with all those tapes etc...

With that said all I can say is Forward at whatever speed we are operating on. These tapes belong to the bands as much as they do to me for nothing will work without mutual agreement.

I had a great time last night as three artists who have been featured here and who I have been covering for 5 years were all playing and I don't want to say that these are 'my favorites' because I am getting really sensitive as to how important it is when I say anything about any band that I try to say something positive and you can see that there maybe is a problem and so it is my wish that I not say anymore good bad or indifferent about any more bands so that when they are featured here you all will not have to listen to my hype or cheerleading etc and can make your own minds up as to there relative position and size in this galaxy of Stars that I attempt to present here.

Thank you Gail and Danny and Darren for the music last night Spudnig at Peri's, Danny's solo show at 19 Broadway Happy Birthday Danny, sorry I sang. I ended up with a birthday song for me Hey it weren't my birthday. Whatever.. I said. I am just a certified fool and I will not worry about it.
Back at Gails show. Purple Haze is supposed to be loud as she explained to whoever was complaining. Finally went off into San Rafael and joined the Honey Dust scene which was jumping down at the 4th Street Tavern. Darren rocked into 9 Bullets and then veered off into Blocked it Out wherein he smacked me square between the eyes by pretty much desecrating (weeyullll... don't ever do it again Puleez!) his great tune by inserting my name ... me 'Guy Meyer has some skeletons settling in...' something like that. Its 1 AM its a small bar you can get away with a lot and You know I know its affection just the abundance of Darren good humor and nothing much more than that but Darren think about the person who has never heard the song before. They'll go home thinking those are the actual lyrics. Or worse who is that weird dude wanting to hide being called out. Mortifying .. well not quite that bad but just in case anyone else thinks I want that kind of attention don't do it spare me I get red easy. It's my nature. It reminds me of my Days when I was a Vikki Lee and the Convertibles groupie, back in the 80's Vikki would frequently break into 'My Guy' when I arrived... cute.. oh cut it out Guy you loved it. Me and Vikki were never 'an item' just to keep the record straight there...

Vikki probably had another great show at Santa Cruz this weekend with the great guitarist Albert Lee settling in as a regular member of the Pinecones. I have footage from Septembers gig in Winters but I am told by those in charge that no Video of Albert is allowed anywhere online as he has a record contract with Sugar Hill and they are huge and I am not ... but that's OK.

Vikki always found great players with her Bands over the years. Kenny Dale Johnson who went on to be the Drummer in Chris Isaac's Band ... and what a great Band, Chris was funny as hell plus the band always Rocked hard that was back in the 80's... Johnny Tremolo aka Grant Perry who last I heard was a car salesman in upstate New York and  put his telecaster in a case under his bed and never took it out again. That could not be true. Grant could play the guitar. Oh man.. as far as I am concerned he was one of the very best later Bill Spooner of the Tubes an incredible guitarist played with the Pinecones and now she has Albert Lee plus she has Michael Jarrett on keys who toured with Jerry Lee Lewis back in the early 60's in his own band. She also has Bob Woods former Asleep at the Wheel guitarist playing plus there is Vikki herself she has a gorgeous voice she writes and is her own inimitable Star.

Hey where am I going tonight. Hush already Videos soon.

PS this whole web site is going to evolve soon you will see. We all must make money to survive. I must we must. We must evolve and Rock on while we still can.
