Bandlands

  September 10, 2006

Vikki Lee and the Pinecones show back in August in Creek Park was a totally enjoyable show. Some of you know that I have been a fan of Vikki and her music going back almost 20 years. She always had hot bands, she always looked hot,
sang great, a hardworking Rocker, plus a very funny woman.

Pinecones up at the Dixon Fair back in May of 2006
'I'm doing all I can but opportunity sure comes slow.'

Those two bottles of wine are working right now!
Playing with cuz' Albert Lee down in Santa Monica last year.
Not far from that warehouse in west LA ?

Things have been getting really heating up lately for her, what with her gigs becoming a frequent destination for her cousin from England, the guitarist extraordinaire, Albert Lee. When Albert is in town she has been selling out the big rooms. There is something about Vikki though. maybe a bit exasperating for some as I heard one of her many occasional sideman tell me just earlier today... she still plays so many dives.. then coincidentally another former sideman of hers at this same musicians party, said to me there is no way she is going to stop playing those gigs.. she loves slummin'.

Thats not slummin'.. thats just Honky Tonkin'.

Here is some classic video by your's truly the excitable cameraman (heck yes!,that music is too hot, to sit still!) of the Pinecones du Jour (of the day). Du jour, Vikki says is the best way to describe them. Ken on Bass and Skip Allan on drums were sitting in. Tip your hat to the marvelous Bob Woods on guitar. Can you imagine when Bob and Albert trade licks on that tune? Bob played with 'Asleep at the Wheel' for a time, but he really deserves some recognition for having what may be the absolute coolest job on the planet. The engineer on the Skunk Train...

Who is Glenn Glenn? I never heard of him. Vikki told me about Glenn and how she has done some work on a documentary about his life and the latest scoop is Glenn Glenn is back in the studio at age 78, with Vikki and Albert laying down some tracks with him.  Two samples of Glenn Glenn from 1958.    'Everybody's Moving' and 'One Coffee and a
Cigarette'

As usual a great bunch of guys are in the band. All Pros.. Chris Ivey the great pedal steel player... Michael Jarrett on keyboards, did you notice his keyboard jumping in the video? Michael is a great singer, composer in his own right... We did an interview of sorts. Michael went to Drake High School in the 1950's and it would be nice to say he graduated from Drake High but that wouldn't be true. We can say that Michael had a special relationship to one of San Anselmo's finest Motorcycle cop Hal Matteucci. 'Michael, Michael, Michael' Hal would say shaking his head and then tell him to get on the back of the motorcycle and bring him back down to the school yard... again. The Pinecones Live at Matteucci's, the interview.
